The Science of Resilience

When confronted with the fallout of childhood trauma, why do some children adapt and overcome, while others bear lifelong scars that flatten their potential? A growing body of evidence points to one common answer: Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult (source: Harvard).

How to Make a Difference

  1. Identify one kid. Then consistently and intentionally invest time with that one kid. Find out what they’re into and spend time doing what matters to them because they matter to you.
  2. Don't get discouraged. It takes time to build trust.
  3. Let them know you see their potential. Let them know that you see under the surface of their troubles. You see what they can be—and what they can be is amazing. (Source: Josh Shipp)
