GONA 2025

GONA Brings Community, Culture, and Connection to Harrah Elementary

Mar 13, 2025

On Thursday, March 13th, Harrah Elementary School hosted a powerful Gathering of Native Americans (GONA), bringing together 81 participants—including 45 sixth-grade students—for a day of cultural connection and personal growth. The event centered on the four foundational values of GONA: belonging, mastery, interdependence, and generosity. Through storytelling, team-building activities, and community dialogue, students explored these values in an atmosphere of respect, learning, and shared purpose.

The GONA was guided by a stellar team of facilitators who brought wisdom, compassion, and cultural strength to the day: Patsy Whitefoot, Jeremy Garcia, Diane Pebeahsy, Andrea French, Xochi Garcia, Talia Carden, Eddie George, Jr., Bobbi Morago, and Rose George. Their leadership helped create a meaningful space for youth to reflect on identity, build community, and celebrate the strengths of Native traditions. Events like this reinforce resilience and unity, showing our students that they are deeply valued members of a vibrant and supportive community.

The impact of the event reached beyond the school, as the Yakima Herald-Republic featured the GONA in its coverage, helping to highlight the importance of culturally grounded youth prevention and the strength of community in action.
